and other ramblings of a small business owner
This isn’t the sort of business book that I would normally go for, and to be honest I don’t think it really meets my criteria of being aimed at very small businesses and with practical application. However, I was intrigued to learn about a company in a completely different part of the world and with a woman playing a very important role.
The book is about THP, which is Vietnam’s leading beverage company, and is written by Phương Uyèn Trần who is part of the Trần family that founded and runs the company. Phương tells the story of how the company was built and talks about her family’s experiences, and also her own experiences as a woman involved in business in Vietnam.
It’s a really interesting read and I feel like I’ve learned a lot about a part of the world that I knew nothing about. It is a very personal book and I very much enjoyed learning about the family and how they run their business. I think the only thing I would say is that it felt like the book was only scratching the surface – I was somehow left feeling like I needed more detail. For example Phương mentions the processes used by the company and how they spent time perfecting them, but without giving any examples of what the processes are. That’s something I would have loved to learn more about.
Overall definitely worth a read, but don’t expect to come away with specific actions to apply to your own business.
